Our

Pigs

We are pig breeder, not just pork producers.

We love the Wessex Saddleback pig as a free range breed, with their large ears making them an exceptionally placid and relaxed breed of pig,  and are really intelligent (as are all pig breeds).

We are continually increasing our numbers of pure breed Wessex Saddleback pigs. The breed is ideal for free range conditions with black hair and white band across their shoulders and front legs. Our pigs are pasture raised in paddocks and free to roam - hence why we say our pigs are Beyond Free Range. All our pigs have access to transportable huts to shelter from the wind and rain and for giving birth (farrowing) to protect their young. During summer all our pigs have muddy water wallows to keep them cool.

Events

The grower pigs are fed an ad lib diet of a high protein, (GMO and antibiotic free) grain that is made up of vitamins and minerals that provide a nutritionally balanced diet to be healthy happy pigs.

They are not bred in sheds or shade cloth sheds lined with straw. They do have a sheltered area to get out of extreme weather conditions and. We have built small colour-bond huts for them. These pigs truly do have a wonderful life.

The pigs are able to exhibit their natural behaviours of digging and foraging for their food. We do not use nose rings to prevent them from digging, we encourage this behavior. Our pigs are pastured raised and able to source usually about 20% of their food from the pasture, weeds (which we love them for), shrubs and all sorts of protein rich bugs that they dig up in the soil.

The pigs are also on a rotational grazing system which benefits the health of the pigs, the soil structure and pasture regrowth. Nothing makes a pig happier than a fresh grass to munch on, particularly when heavily pregnant they will track down any green growth in the paddock.

When available, we source waste products such as Spent Brewery Grain, eggs and whey – all left over products no longer adequate for human consumption but loved by our pigs.

A big shout-out and thank you to our regular suppliers, who help feed our pigs:

  • Mismatch Brewery (Lot 100)

  • Feather and Peck

  • McCarthy Orchards.

Ethically Raised

As a consumer you have the choice to eat ethically produced meat. We strongly believe that all pigs should be free to exhibit their natural behaviours. We passionately believe that our pasture raised model is the most natural and most ethical way to eat your meat and enjoy it knowing that these beautiful, intelligent animals have lived the happiest life possible.

We are true free range. We have larger paddocks (than the mimumum free range requirements) for our pigs to forage on pasture for the benefit of our pigs and the land. We differ from RSPCA and free range standards - we are "Beyond Free Range" in that our pigs are free to roam in open paddocks, they are not kept in large shade cloth shelters/ sheds.

We have a very low rate of piglet loss from sows rolling on piglets, however it is a reality of free range pig farming. To ensure we keep this rate low we continue to breed young sows and rest animals as needed to ensure they are fit and healthy to care for their young. It is amazing to watch how a mother, of such a comparatively huge size, can lower herself down to provide milk for her piglets in such a way to pre-warn and not squash her piglets. It is natural at its best and beautiful to experience.

You are helping this rare breed pig by purchasing our pork. As breeders we are increasing numbers and will look to on-sell breeding pairs in the future.
